Dr. Thomas Walsh, the Henry Schueler 41 & 9 Scholar on Mucormycosis, and one of the world’s leading experts in infectious diseases, and his colleagues, including Dr. Matthew McCarthy from Weill Cornell Medical Center, are at the epicenter of this pandemic in New York City and are fighting for those suffering or at risk for this deadly disease.
We have provided Dr. Walsh and Dr. McCarthy with a grant of $90,419 to help them deliver potentially lifesaving investigational medicines (beyond hydroxychloroquine) to patients. Our grant will directly support their research assistant and Dr. Walsh’s time to write these protocols, submit to the IRB (Institutional Review Board), obtain informed consent, monitor patients, and perform the parallel laboratory work. Time is of the essence.
This historically unprecedented infection impacts all patients with cancer and other forms of immunosuppression. These are patients like Hank, who himself acquired the ultimately fatal mucormycosis infection while undergoing chemotherapy after relapsing in September of 2007.
This research will lead to new therapies and treatments for all patients suffering from COVID-19 while addressing the needs of these most vulnerable people. We are proud to be able to support the fight against COVID-19.
